Awesome Games Done Quick is running all week long, and we’ve already got a major speedrun record. During yesterday’s four-way Super Mario Galaxy 2 race between Jhay, Mutantsabyss, Hardcoregaming, and Supervipert302, Jhay beat his own world record by more than four seconds.
The race was an Any% with Bank run, which requires players to max out their Star Bits with Banktoad to unlock the final galaxy. Jhay’s previous record in this Super Mario Galaxy 2 speedrun category was two hours, 54 minutes, and 55 seconds, while his new record set at AGDQ was two hours, 54 minutes, and 51.33 seconds.

"I JUST GOT WR LIVE AT GDQ IN FRONT OF 80K PEOPLE HOW IN THE ACTUAL UNIVERSE," wrote Jhay in all caps. "I HAVE PEAKED IN LIFE. GALAXY FOREVER."
THEGAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY
If Jhay sounds familiar, that’s because he already broke another Super Mario Galaxy 2 speedrun record earlier this year by gathering all 242 stars in just nine hours and 35 minutes. To put that into perspective, it normally takes a player around 35 hours to perform a completionist run of Super Mario Galaxy 2.
Awesome Games Done Quick will run until Sunday, January 15, with all proceeds going to the Prevent Cancer Foundation. Today's games include Final Fantasy 7, Stardew Valley, Sonic Unleashed, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on the 3DS, while tomorrow's speedruns get off to a fantastic start with Neon White and Kirby Star Allies.
This year's AGDQ is being broadcast online only to protest Florida's "Don't Say Gay" laws, which event organizers say pose a risk to the speedrunning community. The event was originally scheduled to be held in-person in Orlando, but event organizers canceled the in-person event for another year of streaming. We’ll have to wait and see where AGDQ relocates for next year.
