Pokemon Go is celebrating the Lunar New Year with its annual event, titled the Lunar New Year 2023 Event, bringing several changes and bonuses to those who choose to participate. This includes changes to the Pokemon that you frequently encounter, unique bonuses limited-time bonuses, and several other features that you won't want to miss out on.

This year's Lunar New Year Event will be available for less than a week's time, taking place from Thursday, January 19 at 10am to Monday, January 23 at 8pm. We have put together a complete guide for this brief event, giving you all the information you need to take advantage of this event while you can.

Bonuses

There will be different in-game bonuses available to all players who log in and play during this event, many of which are unique compared to bonuses that have been provided for past limited-time events. Make sure to take advantage of all the bonuses during this short event, each provided below.
- Higher chance of encountering Shiny Darumaka
- Higher chance for Lucky Pokemon from trades
- Higher chance of becoming Lucky Friends
- 2x Stardust earned from opening Gifts
- An extra Special Trade can be made each day (two Special Trades daily)
The majority of these event bonuses center around trading Pokemon with other players, so make sure to work and plan with others on your Friends List to truly take advantage of them.
Additionally, you will be able to choose from different in-game rewards and bonuses upon completing this event's Timed Research, Lucky Wishes. Depending on the choice that you make, this will provide you bonuses centered around either Egg hatching, increasing the duration of Daily Adventure Incense, or collecting and earning Stardust.
Research

Timed Research: Lucky Wishes
Like previous Timed Research that was released this season, Lucky Wishes allows you to choose from three different paths, altering the specific tasks you will have to complete and the bonuses that you will be provided. Your three options for this Timed Research will center around either Egg hatching, the Daily Adventure Incense, or collecting and earning Stardust.
Regardless of the path that is chosen for this Timed Research, all players will be given in-game items for completing Lucky Wishes, including a Lucky Egg. Additionally, completing the different tasks for this Timed Research will earn you encounters with the following event-themed Pokemon.
- Azumarill
- Bunnelby
- Combusken
- Darumaka
- Galarian Darumaka
- Magikarp
Field Research Encounters
As usual, there will be special Field Research Tasks available throughout this event, obtained by visiting and spinning Photo Discs at PokeStops and Pokemon Gyms. Of these tasks, those that reward you with Pokemon encounters will give you the opportunity to catch specific event-themed Pokemon, each provided below.

Wild Encounters

During this event window, there will be a change in the Pokemon that are frequently found in the wild, each following this event's specific theme. Make sure to stock up on Poke Balls and adventure throughout the course of this event for a chance to encounter and catch the following Pokemon.

Eggs

With this event comes a change in the Pokemon hatched from 7km Eggs, mainly following this event's themed. Stock up on this type of egg during the event window for a chance to hatch one of the next five Pokemon:
- Chingling
- Darumaka
- Galarian Darumaka
- Riolu
- Scraggy
The most efficient way to acquire 7km Eggs is by opening Gifts sent to you by other Trainers on your Friends List.
Additionally, if you plan to focus on hatching Eggs during this event, make sure to opt for the Egg hatching path in the Lucky Wishes Timed Research.
Stickers And Avatar Items

There will be a brand-new avatar item available with this event: the Red Lantern Backpack. This cosmetic item will be available to purchase at the in-game shop during this year's Lunar New Year event, as well as after its conclusion.
Additionally, there will be event-themed Stickers available during this event. Typically, event-themed Stickers can be acquired by either spinning Photo Discs at PokeStops and Pokemon Gyms, opening Gifts sent to you from other Trainers that you're friends with, or through their purchase at the in-game shop.
