There are several different kinds of quests; some are story-based and will be unlocked at a specific time or after completing the previous quest. Others are available through the Help Wanted board in town or on the Special Order board available after Fall of Year two. One specific quest, Pam Is Thirsty, is a story quest that you'll unlock in your very first year of living in the valley, so we'll show you how to complete it.

Quest Overview

- Quest Name: Pam Is Thirsty
- Requirements: Bring Pam a pale ale.
- Rewards: 350g and 1 Friendship Heart
Accepting Pam Is Thirsty

Pam Is Thirsty will be unlocked when a letter from Pam arrives in your mailbox on Summer 14 of Year One. Pam writes you about her thirst for a Pale Ale, which is a special kind of Beer made with Hops instead of Wheat.
Since it's the Summer season, you should be able to get to work on the quest right away, which is helpful since Hops are seasonal and therefore not always available.
Growing Hops
Since it's the blazing Summer season when Pam writes to you, you'll be able to obtain some Hops Starter seeds at the following locations.
Store
Price
Pierre's General Store
60g
JojaMart
75g
Traveling Cart
100-1,000g
Night Market on Winter 16
- If you wait until Winter to complete this quest, you can buy the seeds during this event
60g
The planted starters take 11 days to fully grow and bear harvestable Hops. You won't be able to walk through them because of their wooden trellis, so make sure to plant them to ensure accessibility.
Hops will regrow one day after being harvested, making them a great investment during Summer.
Turning Hops Into Pale Ale

To make Pale Ale, you will need at least one keg. Kegs are undeniably one of the best ways to make money in Stardew Valley, so unlocking them as fast as possible is the way to go.
The main way to do this is by reaching Farming Level eight, which will require lots of growing and harvesting of crops.
If you can't reach Level eight by the end of Summer, you can simply store some Hops and save them for a later time when you have kegs available.
Once you have unlocked the keg, it can be crafted with the following materials.
- 30x Wood
- 1x Copper Bar
- 1x Iron Bar
- 1x Oak Resin
After placing Hops in a keg, it will take 2,250 in-game minutes to turn into Pale Ale. This is roughly one to two days, so be sure to check on your keg when you wake in the morning.
Completing The Artisan Bundle
Another way to get access to kegs is to complete the Artisan bundle in the Pantry of the Community Center. This is even less likely to be accomplishable by the end of Year one's Summer season, but if you prefer to focus more on Animals and Fruit Trees rather than Farming, this might be helpful for you. Just remember to save some Hops!
Pale Ale At The Beach Resort

The Beach Resort is a late-game location that will probably unlock way after you complete Pam Is Thirsty.
If you still happen to have Pam's quest, you can quickly obtain Pale Ale here. On random days, Gus will visit the Resort; when he does, he will operate a small shop here, where you can purchase Pale Ale for 1,000g.
Delivering Pale Ale To Pam
Once you've waited for your Hops to turn into a Pale Ale, you can retrieve it from the keg and head on over to Pam. You'll often find her at her house, the Bus Stop (if the Bus is back in service), or at the Saloon in the evening.
Overall, Pam is not too difficult to find. If you don't feel like finding her during the day, just swing by the Saloon at night. Once you give her the Pale Ale, you will receive your reward and the quest will be completed!
