The Witcher 3 is filled with side quests that have nothing to do with the main story but are compelling nonetheless. One of them is called 'The Nithing', which concerns a man and his dying child. The latter has fallen victim to a deadly curse. You need to find the one who cursed him and resolve the situation.

Speak To Lothar

To obtain the quest, you can either pick it up from the Rannvaig notice board or speak directly to Lothar – the latter of which you need to do anyway. His house is just southeast of Rannvaig in the center of Skellig. The large man reveals that his boy is heavily ill due to a curse. His proof is a horse's skull on a pole outside of his hut, which is known as a Nithing.
Geralt uses his excellent knowledge of spells to immediately determine that there are only two ways to lift this sort of curse. Either the one who gave them the curse can lift it, or Geralt can deflect it back onto the culprit. This isn't a decision you need to make yet.
Discover Who Cursed Lothar's Family

After finishing your conversation, walk over to the Nithing and use your Witcher Senses to examine it. You'll notice that there are footsteps next to the curse-giving item, so follow them. It doesn't take long until you reach a shawl that's hanging off of a tree branch. Examine the piece of clothing to get its scent and follow it. The smell leads you to Rannvaig, where the trail gets cold.

So, now, you have to get more information from the townsfolk. The woman who can help you stands close to the harbor during the daytime. Ask her about the shawl, and she'll tell you that the herbalist named Jonna is the one you're seeking. She lives just south of Rannvaig's notice board.

She admits to cursing the family and claims that the ill boy should've never existed in the first place. It turns out she used to be with Lothar until he left to be with his current wife. She promises to lift the curse as long as Lothar renounces his son and returns to her.
The Final Decision

Now, you need to return to Lothar to tell him about Jonna and her offer. Naturally, he doesn't want to abandon his family and believes that they'd be condemned to poverty if he did. He asks you to turn the curse around on Jonna. This next dialog option determines the outcome of the quest. Here are your options:
- "Can't Do That" – If Geralt refuses to use the curse on Jonna, then Lothar is forced to do what she requests. He leaves his family and returns to his former love while being very angry with you. The new couple isn't exactly happy together, but everyone lives.
- "So Be It" – After saying this piece of dialog, you need to go to the Nithling and carve Jonna's name into it. Then you can collect your reward of 60 crowns from Lothar. He and his family will be happy, but Jonna will die.
