The next game from The Evil Within developer Tango Gameworks is Hi-Fi Rush, a third-person rhythm brawler that has an art-style reminiscent of Jet Set Radio.
Xbox just held its first Developer_Direct, giving us our best look yet at Redfall, Minecraft Legends, Forza Motorsport, and a look at the next expansion for The Elder Scrolls Online. Although most of those were confirmed to appear before the showcase even began, there was one big surprise in the form of the next game from Tango Gameworks – Hi-Fi Rush.

Hi-Fi Rush sees you playing as Chai, a wannabe rockstar that heads to the Vandelay corporation for a robotic arm and ends up being accidentally implanted with a musical player in his chest. Chai is then labelled a defect by Vandelay and finds himself going up against the robogic megacorp.

The main gimmick of Hi-Fi Rush is that Chai's new music device lets him feel the beat of the world, which the player must try and match during combat by timing their attacks to the music. The more attacks they get in time to the beat, the more damage they do and the more the music builds up in the background, with a range of original and licensed music making up the game's soundtrack. Think No Straight Roads meets Jet Set Radio and you're on target.
The Developer_Direct might have been where Hi-Fi Rush was formally announced by Xbox, but it's been a pretty open secret for some time now. Two years ago, the trademark for the game was spotted online, which was then later followed up by a trademarked logo late last year. Concept art for the project was also spotted online that seemed to support the rumours that it was a third-person adventure with an art style inspired by Jet Set Radio.
